02. Bentonville Battleground State Historic Site

This field commemorates the largest battle ever fought on North Carolina soil as Confederates took on General William T. Sherman’s troops just weeks before the end of the Civil War. The Harper House, which stood during the battle, is outfitted as a Confederate field hospital.

03. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park

Ringed by 100 birch trees representing the Tar Heel State’s counties, this park dedicated to the more than 200,000 North Carolinians who served in the southeast Asian conflict. Facing the entrance is a monolith engraved with the names of  those killed or wounded in the Vietnam War.

05. Battleship North Carolina

This floating museum was the greatest seafaring weapon America  had to offer during World War II, a valiant fighter in every major Pacific Ocean offensive of that era. The decommissioned ship was on the way to becoming scrap iron when it was rescued by the contributions of North Carolina school children and other citizens.

07. Fort Fisher State Historic Site

This historic spot earned the title of the “Gibraltar of the South” during the Civil War, as its cannons provided cover to blockade runners ferrying critical supplies to the port of Wilmington.
