01. McCormick Field

The home field of the Asheville tourists has seen some  impressive talent through the years. Among those hitting home runs at McCormick are Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Kevin Costner in the classic baseball movie “Bull Durham.” The Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are always in contention for the championship of the South Atlantic League.

02. Kidd Brewer Stadium

One of the most picturesque venues in collegiate football, Kidd Brewer Stadium has been home to the tough ASU Mountaineers since 1962. During that time Appalachian has amassed an enviable 189-89-5 record. En route to its third consecutive national championship in 2007, the Mountaineers led the NCAA in attendance, averaging more than 24,000 ASU fans for every home game.

03. E.J. Whitmire Stadium

Since 1974, Whitmire Stadium has been the mountain setting for Western Carolina University’s fighting Catamounts. They play on Bob Waters Field, named for the late winning coach who died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field’s artificial surface is a challenge for any visitors trying to score a win in Cullowhee.

04. Hickory  Motor Speedway

Now in its 56th racing season, the Hickory Motor Speedway proudly claims the title of the oldest continuously operated motor speedway in the country.
The .363 mile asphalt oval is also Catawba County’s oldest professional sports venue. You are sure to see exciting motorsports racing at the “World’s Most Famous Short Track.”

05. North Wilkesboro Speedway

Petty, Earnhardt, Gordon, Waltrip and Labonte – the greats of NASCAR all raced and won on one of the toughest short tracks in the sport, the North Wilkesboro Speedway. The track saw its last Cup race in 1996.
