Fort Macon State Park

Five-sided fort constructed of brick and stone guarded the entrance to Beaufort Harbor. Seized by Confederate troops in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War. During reconstruction, Fort Macon was used as a prison. Collections include military artifacts, Civil War artifacts, two original mortars, and a field gun. Part of the new Civil War Trails program in NC.

Fort Raleigh National Historic Park

Located on the north end of Roanoke Island where Sir Walter Raleigh’s explorers and colonists established settlements. Home to the Waterside Theater where the outdoor drama “The Lost Colony” is held each summer. Elizabethan Gardens are adjacent to the fort.

The Nature Museum highlights the natural history of the region along with collections of gems, minerals, native plants and exhibits on early explorers. The park also includes a restaurant, gift shop, and naturalist programs on a regular basis throughout the summer and fall.

This railroad museum complex includes the Tornado Building, the Hamlet Visitors Center, Main Street Park and the Hamlet Depot, the only Queen Victorian train station in North Carolina.
